In recent times, there has been a growing trend among some Muslims in Yoruba land to incorporate elements of traditional worship, known as “Isese,” into their religious practices especially with the trend of public holiday approval in some states in Yoruba land. While it is important to respect and appreciate our cultural heritage, it is equally important to understand the boundaries between culture and religion.
Islam, as a religion, promotes unity and the worship of one God. It emphasizes monotheism and discourages the worship of any other deities or objects. However, the recent surge in the adoption of Isese practices by the government threatens to blur these boundaries and dilute the essence of Islam.
It is crucial for our religious leaders across all cadres to take a proactive approach in addressing this issue. They have a responsibility to guide and educate their followers on the true teachings of Islam and the potential dangers of blending bad cultural practices with religious beliefs.
One way to tackle this controversy is through a massive sensitization campaign. This campaign should aim to raise awareness among Muslims about the importance of adhering strictly to the principles of Islam and avoiding syncretism with traditional worship practices.
Religious leaders can organize seminars, workshops, and conferences where they can engage with their followers and provide them with the necessary knowledge and understanding. These platforms can be used to debunk misconceptions, clarify doubts, and highlight the potential negative consequences of mixing these façade of idol worship in the guise of cultural practices with Islam.
Furthermore, religious leaders can collaborate with scholars and experts in Islamic studies to develop educational materials such as books, pamphlets, and online resources. These materials should be easily accessible and provide clear guidelines on how to practice Islam without compromising its core principles.
It is also important for religious leaders to lead by example. They should demonstrate through their own actions and teachings the importance of adhering to the true teachings of Islam. By embodying the principles they preach, they can inspire their followers to do the same.
Additionally, collaboration with other religious leaders from different faiths can be beneficial in promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding. By engaging in respectful conversations, we can foster mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s beliefs while maintaining the integrity of our own faith.
Unity among Muslims is crucial, especially in a diverse society like Yoruba land. We must strive to build bridges and find common ground, while also preserving the unique aspects of our cultural heritage. By addressing the controversy surrounding the blending of Isese practices with Islam, we can ensure that the unity Islam beckons for is not compromised.
In conclusion, it is imperative for our religious leaders across all cadres to take a proactive approach in addressing the controversy surrounding the mixing of cultural practices with Islam. Through a massive sensitization campaign, educational materials, and leading by example, we can guide our fellow Muslims on the importance of sticking to the true teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can preserve the unity that Islam seeks to establish among mankind, especially in Yoruba land.

Quite apt at this moment. This piece is quite instructive to all conscious Muslims to be responsive to the task of spreading pristine Islam.
Thank you for this type of write-up in this Period. We need this kind of sensitization as Muslims. All scholars, imams(Jummah Mosque), and preachers should start addressing this issue.
May Allah rectify us better to be a good submissive mulimah and make us among the pious
