An old man used to read the Noble Quran every day with his grandchild. This happened for sometime. One day the grandchild, “as usual of small kids” wanted to try the intelligence of his grandfather. He asked the grandfather to challenge him in reciting some verses or chapters of the Holy Quran out of memory.
The grandchild recited some verses then asked his grandfather to complete them, but the old man couldn’t do well. he mumbled and jumbled then laughter.
The grandchild laughed at his grandpa and said. “Grandpa, you always read the Holy Quran for years now but you cannot memorize anything”.
The old man smiled and said to his grandchild ” I will take the challenge again” but before we start again: Have you seen this “charcoal basket”? take it to the river (near them) and fetch some and bring it. The small boy yelled and said, How can I use a basket to fetch one?
The old man asked him to try he can do it. The small boy complied. took the charcoal basket to the river and fetch water. But before he could move an inch, all the water drained out from the basket. He tried several times but to no vail, he could not carry any water home to the grandfather.
He came and told the old man that, it was impossible for him to use a basket and fetch water. The old man smiled and asked him to look at that basket and see what happened to it.
The small boy said, he could not see anything. The old man asked him to observe the basket very well. The small boy nodded his head and said, “the basket was dirty from the dust of charcoal, but now it is very clean”.
The old man then said “Alhamdulillah” now you will know why I everyday read the Holy Quran.
The grandfather said: “My son, at this my age, I cant memorize more than the short chapters I use in prayers. And at my age, am not reading the Holy Quran for the purpose of memorizing it, but for the purpose of reminding myself about ALLAH swt, for the purpose of rewards, and for the purpose of understanding and contemplating the meanings of the words of ALLAH swt”.
Am reading the Quran for it to purify my heart like the way the river water cleaned the charcoal dust from the basket.
The old man was able to quote a verse from Surat Muhammad or chapter (47) ALLAH swt says:
ﺃَﻓَﻠَﺎ ﻳَﺘَﺪَﺑَّﺮُﻭﻥَ ﭐﻟۡﻘُﺮۡﺀَﺍﻥَ ﺃَﻡۡ ﻋَﻠَﻰٰ ﻗُﻠُﻮﺏٍ ﺃَﻗۡﻔَﺎﻟُﻬَﺎٓ ) ٢٤ )
“Do they not then contemplate deeply in the Qur’ân, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)? (47:24).
So, am not reading the Noble Quran to memorize it like you my son.
Many people think, anyone who reads the Noble Quran must memorize it as well. That’s not the case.
Anyone who reads the Holy Quran is reading it because of one or many of the following reasons: We read the Holy Quran either for:
1. for learning as a beginner ( ﺗﻌﻠﻤﺎ )
2. Or for teaching others ( ﺗﻌﻠﻴﻤﺎ)
3. For the purpose of memorizing. ( ﺣﻔﻈﺎ )
4. or for contemplating the meaning ( ﺗﺪﺑﺮﺍ)
5. Or for worships like in Salat ( ﻋﺒﺎﺩﺓ )
6. Or just to gain rewards ( ﻟﻨﻴﻞ ﺍﻟﺜﻮﺍﺏ )
In the case of the old man, He was reading the Holy Quran based on the last three reasons mentioned above.
Today is Friday, don’t forget to read the Suratul-Kahf. Don’t just read it, but also try to understand some meaning of the verses.
May ALLAH bless us with the blessings of the Holy Quran and may He give us the understanding of its meaning and inspire us to do what it commands us to do and to stay away from what it prohibits us from. Aameen.
