WELCOME ADDRESS BY BROTHER KAMORU SODIQ, AMIR/PRESIDENT, MUSLIM STUDENTS’ SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (MSSN), NIGERIAN LAW SCHOOL, LAGOS CAMPUS HELD AT SIR ADEMOLA ADETOKUNBO HALL, VICTORIA ISLAND, LAGOS
In the name of Almighty Allah. The fashioner and the best Disposer of all affairs. We give salutations and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (SAW), His household, His companions and those who follow their footsteps till the day of reckoning. Aamin.
In the word of James Baldwin, ‘for, while the tale of how we suffer , and how we are delighted and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard’. Today, we gathered here to celebrate an essential part of our societal tradition. The tradition of togetherness. The tradition of peace. The tradition of scholarship.
The Chairman of the day, Prof Gbolahan Elias (SAN) and Chancellor, Lagos State University, Our Guest Speaker, Sheikh Ridwan Jami’, Chief Imam, Lekki Central Mosque, our Honoree for the day, Alh Dr Aare Ade Sanni, President, Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, thank you not only for your support but your time.
Our Panelists, Prof F.A.R. Adeleke, over the years, you have been regular resource person for our program. Thank you for keeping our dream alive. Mr Yusuf Temilade Nurudeen Esq, Mr Yusuf OLALERE Esq, Miss Fatimoh Alada Bukola Esq, you are our heroes and pride. Thank you for being part of our story.
Our teacher and mother on campus, Dr T.I Ahmed, in your humility, gentleness of words and generosity of spirit, you set a profound moral example. Our Chief Imam, Barrister Iskeel Lawal, our Chairman, Mr Akobi and the entire Muslim Ummah, law school Lagos campus, our amiable Chief Host, Dr Nasir Tijani (Head of campus), thank you all for your understanding, tolerance and kindness. I must confess, you are all wonderful people
It’s long been said that you can choose your friends, but you cannot choose your neighbors. Well, by location, we are blessed to be neighbors to communities around here. Though, the truth is, we don’t express it enough. And that is why, we are very proud to have in our midst today delegates from various schools and members of the public from communities around us.
In recent time, the world was visited with a pandemic called Covid-19. There is need for resilient and inclusive development post-pandemic. A 2020 World Bank study on “Leveraging Islamic fFintech to improve financial inclusion,” shows that the young and digitally savvy Muslim population have potential to use technology to advance Sharia compliant financial products. It is in the light of this that the theme of this year symposium; ‘The value chains of Islamic finance and its benefits towards economic development in Nigeria; the need for legal framework” becomes topical and our guest speaker is eminently qualified to do justice to it.
The topics for panel discussions were smartly crafted to reflect on the challenges facing the nation’s judiciary with a view to proferring workable solutions. To all our panelists, I will like to express my deep appreciation for your invaluable support.
We equally extend our heartfelt appreciation to all and sundry who have contributed in kind and cash to the success of the symposium. Permit me to mention Alh Abdus-Samad Rabiu CON, Dr Muiz Banire SAN, Alh Adeniji Kazeem SAN, Alh Sina Shofola SAN, Engr Musa Habeeb, Mallam Yusuf Shuaib among others.
I salute the dedication of the organizing committee headed by Brother Abdul-Karim Ridwan for the job well-done. I’m most grateful to my loyal and dedicsted executive members for your support and cooperation. I commend all Muslim students on this campus for the success recorded today. The achievement belongs to you all. Thank you for giving us the privilege to serve.
