On 2nd October, 2018, Turkish Saudi Journalist, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi Consulate located in Turkey. While all fingers pointed at the Saudi leadership, justice has not been properly served till this moment. The then White House hopeful, Joe Biden, talked about treating Saudi Arabia as a pariah state. The Saudi leadership played their petrodollar card, and the rest as they say, became history.
Ukraine and Palestine are close examples where the champions of democracy support the oppressed in one case and the oppressor in the other. Yet, they will say it’s democracy in action.
Isn’t that so much for the champions of democracy. This case and many more imply that the champions of democracy only use it to advance and protect their interests – as a mantra to forge alliances and polarize the world.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE don’t practice democracy but are close friends of the West while North Korea and China who also don’t practice democracy are taken as foes. Whosoever among the democratic nations does not practice democracy according to the western principles get hostile treatment from the democratic champions if it is not toppled. We will not forget President Mohamed Morsi of Egypt.
That is the world we live in, where in simple terms, might is right, and personal interest defines relationships.
