The brain is one of the body’s most essential organs. It makes up about two percent of our body weight, and is the center of coordination for all our body activities including thought, food metabolism, regulation of temperature, etc.
It is of high importance to learn how to care for this unique and complex organ, which serves as a major determinant in our overall health and wellbeing. They include:
1) Learning new things:
Our brain is the center of memorization and information. When we learn new things such as facts, a skill or even a language, our brain forms new connections between our neurons or brain cells.
This is called “NEUROPLASTICITY”. In this case, we can say the brain expands. It expands by the new connections and neural pathways formed. As we practice what we learn, these connections get stronger, and therefore, our memory improves, retain and remember more of what we have learnt.
2) Good brain fuel:
Brain fuel occurs in the form of the food and nutrients we consume. In order to achieve a healthier brain, our brains need to be incorporated with the necessary nutrients. As an important saying goes: “You are what you eat”.
Leafy greens contain the nutrient vitamin K. Vitamin K helps in the improvement of brain cell and memory.
Fruits such as oranges and tomatoes contain the vitamin C. Vitamin C helps to prevent brain cell damage. It also prevents the Alzheimer’s disease.
Eggs contain Vitamin B which fight against dementia (loss of memory) and depression.
Other good brain food includes fatty fish and dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate is recommended as a snack while studying.
3) Sleep:
The importance of good quality sleep cannot be over emphasized. Over the years, studies and research have shown that adequate sleep helps the brain to retain information.
In addition, it’s during sleep that the brain is able to effectively flush out oxidative/ metabolic waste built up from the brain’s activities.
Inadequate sleep leads to the build up of this waste known as “AMYLOID BETA”, which can lead to the Alzheimer’s disease (a common type of dementia).
4) Exercise:
Exercise helps to increase blood flow which supplies the brain with enough and adequate oxygen.
This, in turn leads to the growth of new blood cells in the hippocampus, the area in the brain responsible for memory.
This increases the rate of focus and assimilation during studying.
A few stretches, jogging or taking a walk/stroll are all basic but helpful forms of exercise.
Taking care of the brain is like energizing the whole human system. When the brain cells are dead, so the body too.
