Thousands of Nigerians have taken to the streets in cities across the country to mark Al-Aqsa Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing occupation of Palestine and the inhumane treatment of the Palestinian people.
Muslim organizations spearheaded the rallies, which took place on September 16, 2024, to show solidarity with Palestine and protest against Israel’s continued occupation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.
The activities surrounding Al-Aqsa Day were organized by several Muslim groups, with Muslim Awareness International (MAI) leading the charge.
MAI launched its awareness campaign a month ago with a solidarity football match and concluded it with a public lecture at the National Stadium in Lagos.
The lecture, titled “Injustice to Palestinians and Genocide in Gaza: A Threat to Democracy and Freedom in the World,” was delivered by former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode. Other prominent speakers included Professor Lakin Akintola, Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), and Shaykh Dhikrullah Shaafi, the Grand Mufti of the Conference of Islamic Organizations (CIO).
Rallies Across Nigeria
While the main event was held in Lagos, rallies also took place in other major cities such as Osun, Abuja, and Kano. These gatherings drew significant crowds, all united in calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and justice for the Palestinian people.
Participants expressed outrage over the ongoing subjugation and oppression of Palestinians, particularly focusing on the siege of Gaza and the occupation of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The rallies and lectures highlighted the need for global solidarity with Palestine and reignited Nigeria’s historical support for Palestinian statehood.
Key Demands from Nigerian Protesters
The rallies also served as a platform for Nigerians to voice specific demands.
Among the key issues raised were the immediate end of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, freedom for Palestinian prisoners, and international protection for Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Speakers at the events called on the Nigerian government to amplify its support for Palestine at international forums, stressing that the continued occupation not only violates human rights but also threatens global peace and democracy.
Chants, Placards, and Solidarity
Throughout the rallies, demonstrators carried placards with powerful messages such as “Free Palestine!,” “End Israeli Occupation!,” and “Al-Aqsa is Ours!” The atmosphere was filled with chants of solidarity, with protesters passionately declaring Nigeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
The rallies demonstrated a renewed commitment to standing with Palestine and advocating for justice in the face of continued Israeli aggression.
Speakers also emphasized the importance of maintaining Nigeria’s historical role as a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, urging the government to sustain its diplomatic efforts. As the rallies drew to a close, participants expressed their hope that the world would take notice of the growing calls for freedom, justice, and peace in Palestine.
