Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the Olympic men’s javelin title in Paris, his country’s first individual gold ever at the Olympics Games.
Nadeem threw an Olympic record of 92.97 metres for victory on Thursday. In what could only be described as astonishing, his last throw of the competition also crossed the 90 metre mark, though fell short of his earlier throw of 92.97 metres that earned him the gold. He was the only athlete to cross the mark. As it became obvious he had earned the gold medal, Nadeem fell to his knees and did “sajdah- tu- shukru”(the prostration of gratefulness)
India’s defending champion Neeraj Chopra took silver with 89.45 and Grenada’s Anderson Peters claimed bronze with 88.54m.
Before Arshad’s remarkable victory, Pakistan had never won an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Nadeem Arshad’s throw is the sixth longest throw of all time, and Asia’s best ever in the Olympics.
