He served as the Political Bureau leader for the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip from 2007 and later became the overall leader of Hamas from 2017 until his assassination by Israel in 2024. Born on January 29, 1963, in the Gaza Strip’s Shati refugee camp, Haniyeh played a significant role in shaping Palestinian politics and resistance against Israeli occupation.
Early Life and Education
Ismail Haniyeh was born on January 29, 1963, in the Gaza Strip’s Shati refugee camp, to a family of Muslim Palestinians. His parents were expelled from Ashkelon during the 1948 Palestine war. Growing up in a refugee camp, Haniyeh was exposed to the harsh realities of Palestinian displacement.
He worked in the occupied Palestine to support his family, attended United Nations-run schools, and graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza with a degree in Arabic literature in 1987. During his time at university, Haniyeh became involved with Hamas and served as the head of the students’ council representing the Muslim Brotherhood from 1985 to 1986. He was also an avid football player and played as a midfielder in the Islamic Association football team.

Haniyeh’s early activism was marked by his participation in protests during the First Intifada. He was arrested and imprisoned by Israeli authorities multiple times, receiving a short prison sentence from an Israeli military court, and later detained and imprisoned for six months in 1988 and three years in 1989.
Following his release in 1992, Haniyeh was exiled to Lebanon along with senior Hamas leaders and 400 other activists. During their stay at Marj al-Zahour in southern Lebanon, Hamas received significant media attention and international recognition. After a year in exile, Haniyeh returned to Gaza and was appointed dean of the Islamic University.
Rise to Prominence
Haniyeh’s involvement in politics began in the 1980s during the First Intifada. He became a key figure in Hamas, known for his charisma and leadership skills. In 2006, he was elected Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, but his tenure was cut short due to international pressure and internal conflicts.
