In the aftermath of an unexpected strike by Hamas on October 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a strong statement, vowing to turn Gaza into a “deserted island.”
However, since then, Israel has been accused of targeting schools, hospitals, churches, mosques, and media centers, leading to widespread criticism. Human Rights Watch reports further confirm the use of internationally prohibited white phosphorus chemicals on Palestinians in Gaza, resulting in a devastating loss of Palestinian lives, including many children.
While China and Islamic nations have called for a ceasefire and a two-state resolution, Western nations have shown their support for Israel and turned a blind eye to the alleged war crimes being committed.
It is regrettable that the hypocrisy of the West not only ignores Israel’s actions but also perpetuates the dehumanization of Palestinians. Each time Israeli fighter aircraft bomb Gaza, Western governments rush to express their support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
The lack of transparency in American weapons sales to Israel has long been a concern, even among members of Congress. The United States’ reluctance to impose significant limits on its security assistance to Israel contradicts its longstanding commitment to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Through its military aid to Israel, the U.S. effectively sponsors Israel’s destructive operations in Palestine.
It is important to recognize that the U.S.-Israel “bond” is not about defending democracy but rather about American imperial interests in the region. The U.S. views Israel as a crucial strategic ally. The reality is that these self-proclaimed promoters of democracy often engage in wars themselves or protect warmongers. Examples include two decades of deadly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as military actions in Libya, Syria, and Sudan in the name of democracy and human rights, with little regard for the innocent victims.
The West prides itself on championing free speech and civil rights globally, but its response to the Palestinian situation paints a different picture. There is a lack of compassion for the victims in Gaza, and protests against the indiscriminate killing of innocent Palestinians are being suppressed in countries like France, Germany, and Hungary. Surprisingly, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman has even suggested that waving the Palestinian flag could be considered a crime.
It is concerning that mainstream U.S. media has provided a one-sided, ahistorical narrative in support of Israeli intervention, while dissenting voices in favor of Palestine are being silenced. Prominent journalist Max Tani reveals that MSNBC has discreetly fired three Muslim broadcasters.
Finally, the West must be aware that the rest of the world sees their double standards, as demonstrated by the massive protests held in support of the Palestinian people worldwide. If the West wants to maintain its credibility, it should reconsider its stance on global issues.
