The recently released results of the Career Mentorship Programme of the Standard Bearers (SB) has continued to generate reactions from education stakeholders across the country.
A breakdown of the results made available to our correspondent, shows that only 14.1% of candidates scored 50% and above.
Dr. Ibrahim Mogaji, the National CMP coordinator for SB, while giving insight into the results said, “in compliance with global best practices, the Standard Bearers conducted this year’s CMP screening examination via Computer Based Test.
“This perhaps is new for this category of students. However, it’s good we have exposed them to the CBT, because as we are all aware WAEC has announced plans to start conducting it’s examination via CBT as well.”
He explained further that, the leadership of SB anticipated the challenge and therefore, for the first time since inception of the CMP, conducted mock examination for candidates to assist their preparations.
The National Cordinator of the Standard Bearers, Dr. Nurudeen Abdurraheem added that “the CMP scholarship examination is set to WAEC standard, therefore candidates who do not prepare well may find the questions rather tough.”
Further disecting the results, Dr.Mogaji said it is interesting to note that there were no much differences in the performance of public and private school students in this year’s examination.
Infact, the overall best student for CMP 2023 is from a public school in Ilesa, Osun State, South Western, Nigeria with 82% aggregate score. A good percentage of those who scored 70% and above were also not from what you can describe as “ivy league” private schools. This pattern of results lay credence to the fact that best output is achieved with students when the home, the environment and the school all play their positive roles. Parents are also encouraged to look at the teaching standards and the motivation of tutors in schools and not just the aesthetics and architectural design.
The Principal of the school where 3 of the students scored above 70% including the second best overall with 78% said, “I am very excited about the performance of my students. I know my school is not so popular but our teaching standard is quite high. The results have confirmed that”. The hairdstylist mum of the second best candidate said, “I prayed hard for my daughter to do well in this examination. I am so excited now upon seeing her score. I really need the assistance to pay the WAEC fees”. A candidate that scored 50% in the examination said, “I wish I prepared more, the test showed me my weakness. I will do better in my WAEC examination”.
It will be recalled, that Standard Bearers just released the results of it’s flagship Career Mentorship Programme. The program aims to assist deserving and most especially indigent but brilliant students pay for their WAEC registration fees. The program has assisted thousands of students since inception in 2017.
