Al-Mumin (AM) Schools, Alakuko, Lagos state on Wednesday held its 7th biennial inter-house sport competition amid jubilation and celebrations among pupils, parents and staff of the school.
The school located at 23A, Agas Road, Alakuko and 11, Nureni Akintola Street, Alagbado, Lagos State came to live as pupils from different schools within the community engaged in different sporting activities.
The inter house-sport, apart from the invited schools attracted traditional chiefs, community leaders as well as heads of other private and public schools in Lagos state.
Some of the invited schools were, All Leamsp Schools in Ifako Ijaye, Iqra Group of Schools, Lagos Muslims International School, Peace Professional College, Expert College, Goodwill International School, Ijaye Ojokoro High School and Mimak College.
Our correspondent learnt that the inter-house sports competition, which held at the beautiful Frontliners Schools Playing Ground stadium of Caleb British International School around Agbado Oja area in Lagos did not only promote sportsmanship among the students, but also offered an opportunity for parents, guests and lovers of sports to witness such spectacular athletic performances as march past, relay races and sack race, among others.
The competing students were grouped into the school’s traditional four houses; Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory House (Navy Blue), Zaynab Al-Ghazali House (Burnt Orange), Hassan Al-Bannah House (Teal Green) and Robiah Adawiyyah House (Onion).
Speaking at the event, the General House Master of the school, Mr. Sunday Elijah Peter said though the fundamental objective of the school is robust academic leanings, but sport is also an integral part of the overall grooming of the children to prepare them for the future.
He said: “At Al-Mumin Schools, we consider sporting activities an integral part of their education, which shouldn’t target just the mind. Education is also about the body and brain.
“It is only when all the different aspects have been well trained that you can have a total child.”
He described the students’ performance as amazing. He was particularly happy that the event served as a forum for the students, parents, school management and well-wishers to interact.
The Chief Executive Officer of the school, Ustaz Adelopo Abdul Fattah said the school combines both co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
He described the competition as a demonstration of the school’s commitment to raising all-round individuals.
“This inter-house is a celebration of the activities of champions, it is indeed a core aspect of the mission and vision of our school,” the CEO said. “We are committed to bringing up a total child.”
He noted that the competition would also enable the participating students to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship.
He said: “For instance, if you are teaching mathematics, you can bring in sports by joggling. And when you are joggling, you are learning your tables. We are committed to making a total child at Al-Mumin School.”
Expressing delight, chairman of the Day, Engineer Yahya Suleiman said he was impressed with the students’ performance.
He urged parents to encourage their children to take on sporting activities. “No matter how brilliant in academics a child is, he/she needs activities like these to improve overall,” he said.
At the end of the overall competition, Zainab Al-Ghazali House came first, followed by Hassan Al-Bannah House, while Robiah Adawiyyah House came third and Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory House came fourth position.
