Mr. Gidado Habib, a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile Ife has shared a true life story of how a man ridiculously negotiated the price of Banana from a local Fruit hawker in Badagry area of Lagos state who was trying to survive with the little profit she earned from sales.
In a statement that Mr. Gidado Habib sent to Dpath To Jannah Media Hub, he admonished Nigerians to shun manners at which people ridiculed price of goods from local hawkers who barely find a means to survive through selling goods.
Narrating the story, he said: ” I saw a man haggle the price of fruits from a local Fruit Hawker in Badagry area of Lagos state. The Hawker tagged the Banana at 150 naira but the man insisted on buying them for 70 naira each.
“The woman was not happy with the transaction. Her face radiated anger. She sadly bent and raised the Tray of fruits to her head and moved on.
“Few minutes later, she returned and told the man to add 10 naira, so he could buy them at 80 naira each.
“The Man concurred and bought two. The Hawker’s face was still reflecting unhappiness.
“I observed the situation and mentally calculated the amount of all her goods. It was about a thousand naira or less.
“The Hawker’s cloth were tattered. Her footwear was shabby. It actually shows that the woman was only trying to survive with the little profit she earned from the sales.
“I turned to my brother sitting next to me and asked him to buy the fruits and distribute them to the Fasting Muslims for Iftar.
“He bought everything and gave her a tip. She prayed fervently. We asked her to go because her prayers weren’t likely to end soon.
“Many of us are culprits. We spend enormously on frivolities but haggle ridiculously with petty traders.
“Let’s try to change our ways. If you give a big tip to a petty trader, their happiness will reciprocate. If you want to be happy, make others smile.
“It’s very tough to survive in Nigeria. If you are privileged to eat twice a day, you are rich.
“You will achieve more in this world through mercy than you will through retribution – Nelson Mandela.”
