The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Obafemi Awolowo University chapter has urged the newly inaugurated student’s union executives to bear the interest of the Muslim students on campus.
This was contained in a statement on Tuesday evening by the MSSN OAU Amir (President), Rahaman Quadri.
According to the statement, “Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University Branch (MSSN OAU) wishes to congratulate the president of OAU Students’ Union (SU), Olayiwola Folahan Festus, and his executives on the auspicious ceremony of their inauguration/swearing-in.
“Their inauguration is symbolic in that it affords the students of this institution the privilege to have people to call their representatives, responsive to them. In this vein, MSSN OAU extends its congratulatory message to the generality of OAU students for their perseverance and commitment without which this occasion would not have been possible.
“We, at MSSN OAU, identify with the valiant cause and struggle for which OAU Students’ Union is known for, stands for, and its activities — channelled towards the betterment of the students’ welfare and living conditions.
“Our vision as a student-religious body is in consonance with the very reason for which the SU was reinstated and had always existed in the first place. The reinstatement of the union body provides a viable and veritable redress option for aggrieved students, a platform for the improvement of students’ welfare — an ultimate objective of the MSSN, OAU. In the Students’ Union stands a go-between or intermediary between the students and the school authorities.
“We hope to work hand in hand with the new administration and revitalise the synergy and relationship that had always existed between MSSN OAU and the SU before its proscription five years ago.
“We implore the new administration to put to bear the interests of the Muslim students, our peculiarities and matters of Muslim sensibilities in its decision-making process. In line with the Union’s creed of struggle and rightness, it is expected that the rights of Muslim students would be protected like those of every other student, and not be trampled upon for any reason.
“On a final note, we wish the newly-inaugurated officers a successful and productive tenure in office.”
