On the first of October, ninety sixty
Nigeria got her independence.
“Freedom”, we said it was.
Nay! We are in dependence
Governed by freewill
And forceful nature of power intoxication
Controlled by the greedy nature
Of making the public cake
A family legacy.
Six and one years of animosity
Against internal races.
Sixty-one years of being
Cruel to one another.
Alas! We still long,
Yearn, hope, and pray for a better nation.
Arise! Oh compatriot.
Let’s rise to disobey our free will,
selfishness, self-centeredness
And be Independent from being egocentric.
Let’s stay strong, faithful, and be good
For the better nation that awaits us.
