It was the Battle of Uhud. The two warring parties were stationed at opposite sides of the battle field, each with different resolves; the Meccan army armed strongly with the resolve to wallop the Medinan army, avenge for their defeat in the battle of Badr, kill the prophet and snuff out the Islamic faith. The Medinan army, inspired by the prophet, were armed with the resolve to defend the city of Medinah and of course, Islam.
The Meccan army outnumbered the Medinan army in many folds. They were sure of victory this time and even brought their women along to inspire them with drums, whistling, and songs. The Muslims, though outnumbered, however, had the mountain to their advantage.
There positioned were fifty well-skilled archers to repel the charging Meccan infantry. These archers were under the strict instruction not to move from their positions no matter the situation of the war.
The battle began. The two sides fought fiercely. In between, the Muslims were gaining the upper hand, their meagre number notwithstanding.
The Meccan army began to retreat. Their women led the way, their belled legs jingling. It was then the archers committed a grievous mistake which changed the course of the war; they yielded.
Believing that they were winning the war, they left their strategic positions to pursue the fleeing Meccan army. Khalid ibn Walid, an adroit Meccan warlord saw this loophole and together with his cavalry, he attacked the Muslims from the rear. I guess you know the rest of the story. A lot of Muslims fell in the war. At some point, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was rumoured dead. He, in fact, lost his front teeth and had the bone of the forehead broken, to say the least. All this happened because of just the mistake of the minority.
Our everyday life is just like the Battle of Uhud. Good days come and the not so good days. The battle of Uhud is there for all to learn from. Don’t yield. Stay rooted to the right path. Don’t yield!
Give to a good day the same commitment you give to a not so good day. Give to a not so good day the same attention you give to a good day. And when victory appears imminent, don’t allow it to sway you off your stand; remember the archers at Uhud and their costly misjudgement.
When a loss appears apparent, you mustn’t allow it to spin you around like a spiralling whirlwind. Don’t yield!
