A renowned Islamic Institute in Nigeria, Markazud Daa’wah Wathaqoofatil Islamiyyah based in Ile Ife, Osun, will hold a mental awareness programs on Friday and Saturday on Zoom account to mark the World Mental Health Day (WMHD) which is always celebrated globally on Every October 10th.
The WMHD, according to the World Health Organisation, is marked with the overall objective of raising awareness on mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.
The day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental issues to talk about their work and what needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
In line with the WHO objectives, the Markazud Daa’wah has mapped out plans to tackle depression among Nigerian students.
Speaking with our correspondent on Tuesday, the Coordinator of the Islamic Institute, Mallam Awolumate Muiz said the program is aim at eradicating depression among Nigerian students.
According to him, “Globally, 322 million people are suffering from depression which is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, decreased energy, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, and poor concentration. It also leads to impairment of an individuals’ ability to function and carry out everyday tasks and responsibilities, and could lead to suicide.
“Depression in Nigeria is more common than we think. Depression is a significant public health problem and many Nigerians, most especially the students are currently suffering from it. As a result, we have brought out the program with a view to tackle and eradicate depression among Nigerian students.”
While giving update on the program to our correspondent, the Coordinator said: “Markazud Daa’wah hereby invites all Nigerian students to participate in a two-day mental health awareness program in a view to tackle depression.
” The program will hold on Zoom. It will occur on October 9th (Friday) and October 10th (Saturday), 2020 at exactly 5:00pm and 10am respectively.
” On Friday, We will be having a lecture on the topic: “Islamic Perspective, Causes & Control Of Depression Among Students” which will be delivered by Ustadh Muyideen Olushola by 5:00pm.

” On Saturday, we will be having another lecture on the topic: “Depression Among Students, Psychological Solution” which will be delivered by Dr. Abdul Waasi Badrudeen.
